You Can Keep a Family Moment Off Social Media

A family photograph can be worth keeping even when nobody outside the family sees it. You can enjoy the picture, send it to a particular person, or leave it in a private album. Posting is one option, not the step that makes the moment complete.

What would I actually like to share?

Separate taking a photograph from publishing it. You may be comfortable with one and not the other. You can also have different preferences for different pictures, especially when children or other people appear in them.

This is a guide to expressing personal preferences, not a statement about legal permissions or a platform's privacy guarantees.

What can I say before a gathering?

Try: “We'd love a few photos, but please check with us before posting pictures of our family.” Give the relevant people a clear request rather than hoping they will infer it from your own account.

If another adult shares responsibility for those choices, agree your approach together first. A relative should not have to work out which of several conflicting messages to follow.

Does a private album have to become a project?

No. You can keep the pictures in a place you already use and understand. Check the actual sharing settings of any service rather than assuming that an album name makes it private.

You do not need a printed book, a caption, or a monthly collection before the photograph counts as kept.

What if someone asks why I did not post?

“We decided to keep that one for ourselves” is enough. You can explain more if you want to, but the preference does not need to become a debate about everybody else's choices.

Can I change my mind later?

Yes, while considering the people pictured and the sharing arrangements involved. You are allowed to make a deliberate choice rather than follow the momentum of a busy afternoon.

The memory belongs in your life before it becomes content. Keeping an ordinary moment for a small circle, or for yourself, is a complete way to enjoy it.
